Re: Thanks but no thanks: when to turn down a speaking engagement!

One way to turn them down is to have a limit on the amount of red tape you will deal with. There is a funny story called Thirteen Times told by the famous physicist, Richard P. Feynman, in the book, Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman.
He once agreed to give a talk at a city college on the condition that he did not have to sign his name more than thirteen times, including cashing the check. Of course, they had to struggle mightily to meet that limit.
You could explain to towns that you have a 25 signatures rule as your limit, since I doubt that most towns currently could meet Feynman’s 13 times rule.
