Hi Lisa,
Well, I was careful to say 'at least some' of these speakers! Maybe it depends upon the nature of the wrong-doing, In the case you mentioned, the loss of respect is pretty clear-cut whereas perhaps with some financial irregularities - particularly if they were a long time ago - there may be more room for a kind of rehabilitation of our respect.
The same perhaps goes for infidelities. As someone from outside the US, it never appeared to me that respect for Bill Clinton's hugely impressive public speaking (both in terms of charisma and technical ability) was dented too much by his, er, 'difficulties!'
