A blog with valuable free presentation skills tips from a busy expert public speaker, radio comedy writer, speechwriter and trainer
"This is an unusual blog; the art of public speaking is crucial to politics and yet there's not much devoted to it specifically. This blog does, with posts combining accounts of the writer's recent engagements with some handy hints. Given some of the turgid speeches we're forced to suffer in the Commons, more MPs could do with reading it". politics.co.uk Subscribe Share/Save/Bookmark Nick R Thomas's Facebook profile "Nick spoke at our joint meeting with Kingston 41 Club. It was a brilliant evening. Nick is an engaging speaker, witty, topical and very interesting. He spoke for three quarters of an hour without notes, a most knowledgeable man. I cannot recommend Nick enough and can assure you that engaging him is a worthwhile endeavour. I wish you a great evening like ours". Manny Martins Vice Chairman of Hamble Valley Stick Club and 41 Club Regional Councillor, Region 24. "Your speech to our 9 Rotary Clubs in North Surrey was much appreciated by me and I have received lots of feedback which was very positive about you. It was so refreshing to hear someone who has the wit to make us laugh throughout the evening without resort to 'blue' material and swearing. I do hope many others will get the chance to experience your talents". Howard Smith, Assistant Governor Area 1 Rotary District 1140. BlogWithIntegrity.com Speaking Pro Central

Highcliffe Evening WI

My second booking on 19 November saw me returning to the Highcliffe Evening Women's Institute in Dorset where I last spoke in June 2005. There were around 45 ladies there and my topic this time was the Power of Humour in Everyday Life.

The talk went very well, helped by the fact that the annoying cough which had interrupted my presentation in Swanage a few hours earlier never came back. I was certainly expecting it to and I made sure that I was well-prepared with sweets and a glass of water - but it didn't happen.

Public Speaking Tip #267: Many of the challenges we might expect while speaking may not actually occur. Be prepared for problems, by all means - but don't spend your allotted time distracted by your expectation that they will appear! Concentrate on your content and delivery and deal with any problems if and when they present themselves.

A friendly WI to speak to and my thanks to their Speaker Secretary's husband Sid for running me back to Somerford.

Swanage Ladies Luncheon Club

My fourth talk in Swanage this year was for the Ladies Luncheon Club on 19 November, two years after my last booking for them. The Sandbanks ferry was out of service due to maintenance work so the bus had to travel the whole distance from Bournemouth by land (hence the appalling punning title of this post!) but I arrived at the Grand Hotel in good time for my 11.15 start.

There were about 45 ladies at the meeting and the talk this time was my most recent addition, I Must Write That Down! (A Commonplace Book). I was conscious of the fact that a few of them would already have heard me deliver it at Durlston WI back in January but this is a new-ish presentation which is still evolving so this version did at least include the odd item which was unfamiliar to them.

Public Speaking Tip #266: It's always a little tricky when you know there are audience members who have heard the same material elsewhere; you don't want to bore them but at the same time you may not wish to change content which works well just for the sake of a few. My suggestion would be to make any revisions which you may have been considering anyway so that at least parts of it will be different.

The talk went well apart from a coughing fit (mine - it's that time of year again!). Nobody had any lozenges but a couple of the ladies provided me with Polo Mints and Werther's Butterscotch and this mini-confectionery stall seemed to get me through the rest of it! After a question and answer session, I enjoyed a very nice lunch with the club and we then chatted over coffee while enjoying the excellent sea views from the hotel.

One of the great things about visiting so many places as a speaker is the wealth of local knowledge available to me. For example, I knew that back in the 1940s/1950s, my late grandmother had worked as a cake maker at a bakery in Swanage called the Rose House but I was never sure where this had been located. By asking around at this club, I soon found a lady who was able to tell me.

Public Speaking Tip #267: If you speak to a wide range of groups, you will find audience members who are able to answer your questions and sometimes even help you with problems. Just one more reason to become a public speaker!

As with my last visit, I wasn't able to walk up to Peveril Point, not because of the weather this time but because I had to head back for an evening booking in another part of Dorset. I also noticed that for some reason, again as with my previous time there, a visit to Swanage seemed to disable the signal on my Blackberry for a couple of hours!

Morris minor Owners Club Dorset Branch

Speakers want our audiences to find us interesting but sometimes I am booked by organisations which are fascinating in their own right.

On 5 November I had another engagement at a Club Night for the Morris Minor Owners Club's Dorset Branch in Bournemouth. I last spoke to them in June 2005.

This is part of a national network celebrating these wonderful cars (and vans!) which were massively popular during my childhood. The room where they meet at the Southern Electric Club was well stocked with merchandise, such as model Morris Minors, Morris Minor mouse mats, Morris Minor greetings cards, Morris Minor coasters (I bought a set!)...

Members travel in from up to 30 miles away to attend this club and there were around 50 - 60 there.

I mentioned in one of my three posts back in April about marketing yourself as a speaker that specialist clubs will often book talks on topics not related to their subject. The last time I spoke to this club it was about My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer. This time my topic was An Attractive Impediment: The Life, Literature & Laughter of Patrick Campbell. My opening remarks pointed out that Campbell's heyday was during the era of the Morris Minor - so that was a tailored start to my presentation.

One of the props which I bring along for this talk is an issue of Lilliput magazine which employed Patrick Campbell as its Associate Editor. Glancing through it before I was due to speak, I noticed an article about slow motorists - from 1954! During the talk, I drew the audience's attention to a humorous reference the author made to cherished car clubs and their love of badges. As you can imagine, this drew a big laugh of recognition from this crowd.

Public Speaking Tip #265: Is there some prop or perhaps something you have seen in print which has particular relevance when you speak to a special interest group? The response when you include this tailored material can be excellent, especially if it is humorous.

The Club posted the following on their website:

"Many thanks to Nick Thomas for his talk on Patrick Campbell at November Clubnight - very good!"

So I think it went well!

Afterwards, I chatted to some of the members including a former teaching colleague from Bournemouth and Poole College. Audiences often include someone I know, perhaps not surprising in view of the fact that I speak to thousands of people each year.

It was an enjoyable evening with the added bonus that, despite it being 5 November, my presentation was not interrupted by any pyrotechnic sound effects!
